Prenatal Care Q & A

What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care involves the medical care you receive throughout your pregnancy to ensure your own health and well-being as well as the healthy growth and development of your baby.

To provide you with the highest quality prenatal care, the physicians at Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates take a personalized, individual approach. Unlike most other practices, they deliver very personalized prenatal care.

You will not be seen by a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant, a midwife, or one of many physicians. You will usually see the same physician for your prenatal visits and that physician, who is intimately familiar with you and your pregnancy, will usually deliver your baby.

Prenatal visits include routine checkups, noninvasive screenings, and nonstress testing during the nine months of your pregnancy. Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates can also accommodate high-risk pregnancies that require extra care and medical attention.

Your pregnancy may be high risk due to complications like:

  • Diabetes
  • History of preterm labor
  • History of preeclampsia
  • Advanced maternal age (over 35)
  • High blood pressure (hypertension)
  • Multiple gestation (twins)

The physicians offer the highest standard of prenatal care during every stage of your pregnancy.

The small practice size of Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates allows the physicians to establish a unique relationship with you during this special time. This relationship also guarantees your baby is delivered by a physician you know and trust.

How often do I schedule prenatal care visits?

You should schedule your first visit as soon as you know you’re pregnant so that the doctors can carefully monitor your health and your baby’s development.

Typically, you can expect to schedule a prenatal visit every month until week 28. After that, you’ll visit every two weeks until week 36, at which time, you will start weekly visits until you’re ready to deliver.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, you may need to visit with your Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates provider more frequently based upon your unique needs.

What happens during prenatal visits?

During your initial prenatal visit, your Highland Park Ob-Gyn Associates provider spends time reviewing your personal and family medical history and any previous pregnancies you’ve had.

They may also perform a physical examination, laboratory studies, and ultrasound.

Throughout your prenatal care visits, your provider continues to evaluate your overall health and track the growth of your baby. They offer on-site ultrasounds that allow you to see your baby as it grows and reveal your baby’s sex around 18-21 weeks.

Your provider also works with you on a labor and delivery plan, so you know what to expect when you’re ready to give birth. The providers can also perform infant circumcision for males soon after birth.
